It was as month without a Nalu Dry Goods on Main Street in Bay Shore.
But that month is over.
The popular surf shop that vacated its location at the southwest corner at Main and Maple Avenue this past Halloween opened again on Monday — just a few storefronts to the east, at 4 East Main Street, next to Salon Eden.
In the meantime, Nalu opened a location in Huntington Village as well, since the original plan was to leave Bay Shore and just run the one North Shore store.
But Nalu owner Marie Fischer credited the Greater Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce, specifically its president, Donna Periconi, in helping keep her in downtown Bay Shore.
Periconi said Bay Shore’s holiday season is even more joyful now that Nalu Dry Goods has reopened.
Fischer had lost her last lease under a new building owner.
“When we learned Marie Fischer had to move, I reached out to many of our building owners to see if they had a new location for this favorite shop,” Periconi said. “We were determined to keep them here at home in Bay Shore!
“Fortunately, Tom and Sabrina Rettaliata, wonderful landlords, neighbors and advocates for Bay Shore, made a place for Nalu in their beautiful building at the corner of Maple Avenue and Main Street. The spirit of giving is alive and well in our community and we wish Nalu continued success in our hamlet.”
“I’m definitely happy to be able to stay in Bay Shore where we’ve gotten so much support from the community” Fischer said on Wednesday.
And at 1,500 square feet, the new shop is larger than the one at the corner.
The dry goods are the same, and include women’s, men’s and youth apparel and accessories with a skater and surfer appeal. Nalu also sells complete skateboards and decks and Fischer plans to stock surfboards come spring.
She’ll be hosting a grand opening party at Nalu this Friday, Dec. 9, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. It will be open to the public — with a blowout special on clothing that’s buy one, get one 40 percent off.
“We’ll just have some food and hang out,” she said.
There will also be apple cider and cocoa for the kids, and grown up drinks for the adults.
Nalu (Hawaiian for wave, by the way) will hold holiday hours that run from 10-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10-8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 11-5 p.m. on Sunday.
