Babylon welcomed in the holiday season like old times Friday night in the village.

It was the Old Fashioned Babylon Village Christmas Night of Shopping, and hundreds took to the streets for shopping specials or just to enjoy some entertainment.

The night was made possible by volunteers with the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce.

“We really got lucky with good weather this year which I think is the reason for a great turnout,” said village resident Frank Petruzzo, also the president of the Babylon Beautification Society.

Petruzzo handed out free hot chocolate and candy canes with his team from their large tent setup.

“The kids love it more than the hot cider we had a few years ago,” he said laughing.

Throughout the night, children were lined up with their parents to ride one of the big attraction, an old-fashioned Christmas carousel from All County Amusements Inc. in Islip.

“The Chamber called us three years ago and we’ve been bringing the carousel in ever since,” said All County Amusements owner John Grauer.

Merchants stood outside their shops to engage passersby.

Hot food was at the ready along the street.

All that, and Santa Clause and Mrs. Clause could be spotted waving to attendees while atop a horse drawn carriage. Kids got to pose for pictures with the Clauses, or the Grinch.

“This is a great night,” said Giovanna Domingo, 21, of Babylon. “You see the whole village come out and there’s such a camaraderie amongst the town. You see everyone supporting one another which is nice and it’s a safe, fun-filled night for families and everyone in the village.”
