58-year-old man dies after boat capsizes at Captree State Park

His 16-foot Boston Whaler struck the docks repeatedly before flipping over Friday night

A 58-year-old man was killed after the boat he was attempting to launch struck docks multiple times Friday night and capsized at Captree State Park, state police said.

The incident happened about 8:37 p.m. at the Captree State Park Piers. State police, state parks cops, Suffolk County Police Marine Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene.

Investigators said the man was launching a 16-foot Boston Whaler when the vessel was seen striking the docks over and over before it capsized. Responders recovered his body from underneath the boat.

The man was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation. State police did not release the man’s identity, pending family notification.
