Update: All Saturday games across Nassau and Suffolk have been postponed
One of the most anticipated high school football games in Long Island history has a new date.
Massapequa and Garden City will square off at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium after Saturday’s game was postponed due to the nor’easter bearing down on Long Island.
Section VIII, which governs Nassau County interscholastic sports, announced the change Friday afternoon.
The announcement came as all Saturday high school football games across Nassau and Suffolk counties were postponed because of the storm.
Massapequa-Garden City had originally been scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday. The extra wait only adds to the buildup surrounding a matchup that has been years in the making.
Garden City enters the game riding a 68-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the nation and a New York State record, according to Newsday.
Massapequa, meanwhile, has won 25 straight and is coming off its third consecutive Long Island Class I championship.
The game is the first regular-season crossover between the top seeds in Nassau Conferences I and II, part of a new scheduling format approved by the Nassau County Football Coaches Association.
Massapequa and Garden City were matched because each was voted the preseason No. 1 seed in its respective conference.
