Motorists are advised that nighttime travel lane closures on NY27/Sunrise Highway are underway at Brook Avenue and Deer Park Avenue in the Towns of Babylon and Islip, Suffolk County.
One or two lane closures on NY27 in the eastbound and westbound directions will be in effect from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday through Friday, through mid-April while temporary lane striping and temporary concrete barrier is put in place.
At least one travel lane will remain open to motorists during this time.
Drivers are being warned in advance of the travel lane closures via electronic road signs, but should plan to take alternate routes to avoid possible delays.
These travel lane closures are necessary to install temporary pavement markings and temporary concrete barrier prior to conducting bridge repairs. As with most road work, these operations are weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather.
Emergency service providers and local officials have been notified of these travel lane closures. Motorists unable to use alternate routes are reminded to obey all traffic rules and drive carefully through the work zone for their protection as well as the safety of workers.
These work operations are part of the $13.5 million New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) project to extend the service lives and maintain the structural integrity of six bridges in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Improvements include but are not limited to concrete deck repairs, steel girder repairs, pedestal and bearing replacement, installation of pedestrian fencing, milling and resurfacing the pavement on the bridge and restriping the roadway with new pavement markings.
In addition, innovative joint and slab designs will be installed to provide a smooth roadway surface that reduces the potential for weather-related deterioration at the bridge deck joints.
The New York State Department of Transportation appreciates the patience and cooperation of motorists during this important bridge repair project.
