Bay Shore Chamber to file legal action against parking meter program

The legal wheels are in motion to try and rid Bay Shore of its much-maligned parking meters.

At the last Greater Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce meeting last month, it was announced the chamber will be filing an Article 78 Proceeding against the Town of Islip to appeal the meter program.

“We’re challenging the whole program as being unlawfully implemented and beyond the authority of the Town Board,” said Bay Shore attorney Jason Fenley, who is representing the chamber. “At first, I assumed the town had taken the right steps to implement the program, but the more I dug, the more I dug, the more I found.”

The Town of Islip installed the first meters on Maple Avenue in 2015, later adding more at the local LIRR station and Bay Shore Marina in 2016. The meters then hit Main Street in November of 2017 and in the back parking lots in April.

“We continue to protest against the Town of Islip parking meter program,” said Donna Periconi, the chamber’s president. “It is simply unconscionable that Bay Shore is the only hamlet in Islip with meters.”

Town of Islip officials were unaware of the challenge and refused to comment about possible proceedings.
