Three weeks after graduating from William Floyd High School, Daniel Austin is trading in his cap and gown for a different uniform.
A Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) member during his time in high school, Austin enlisted in the U.S. Navy and this week headed off to boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois. The Mastic Beach resident is scheduled to complete boot camp in September, and then begin serving as the rank of a seaman.
Austin is expected to train to become a submarine mechanic. At William Floyd, Austin was an active participant in the school’s NJROTC program, as well as a Suffolk County Music Educators Association (SCMEA) All-County cello player with the school orchestra.
