Transport yourself into a story through Patchogue-Medford Library’s newest literary initiative in Medford.
Earlier this month, the library began the The StoryWalk Project at Sean Dixon Memorial Park in Medford.
The project is an effort to get families to enjoy outdoor activities while reading a story at the same time.
Here’s how it works.
Framed pages from a children’s book are attached to wooden stakes and placed along an outdoor path. Kids can walk down the trail to follow the story.
This idea, which is featured in 50 states and 13 countries, was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpellier, Vt., and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.
The first outdoor StoryWalk was unveiled in Medford on Aug. 10.
The library picked “Finding Kindness,” written by Deborah Underwood and illustrated by Irene Chan, because of its message of community, compassion, giving, and the importance of showing kindness in small ways, every day.
This story will be on display at Sean Dixon Memorial Park, located at 2215 Route 112 in Medford (on the corner of Jamaica Ave. and Route 112) until the end of August.
Sean Dixon Memorial Park was chosen as the location for the interactive literary activity because it is an ideal gathering space with its open, grassy fields, swings, playground equipment, gazebo with picnic tables, and Little Free Library.
The park was renamed in honor of a young Patchogue-Medford resident, Sean Dixon, who lost his battle with cancer in 2017.
Funding for the StoryWalk provided by the Patchogue-Medford Friends of the Library and the Community Engagement Department of the library.
