Nalu Dry Goods surf shop moves into new space on Bay Shore’s Main Street

This Bay Shore surf shop found a new home — and it’s double the size. 

Nalu Dry Goods has moved from 4 East Main St. to 100 West Main St. in Bay Shore after securing the new building last month. 

The retail store is “softly” open to the public while owner Marie Fischer puts together the finishing touches before a grand opening on June 12 during Bay Shore’s Art Festival By the Bay.

Fischer said with Bay Shore’s downtown “blowing up,” the decision to find a new space for Nalu was now or never. 

“We bought this place,” Fischer said. “I had another five years renewed in the other space if I wanted to, but then after that, there’s no guarantee … I felt like now is the time.” 

With double the amount of space in comparison with the old store, the racks are filled with clothes and shelves stocked with merchandise. 

The open space gives off an industrial feel to match the shop’s surf and skate vibe, Fischer said. 

There is more room to display the variety of skateboards Nalu offers, whereas, in the old shop, Fischer said she had to keep them in the back and pull them out for customers.  

Fischer added that they have already filled up most of the new store. 

She and her husband, Christopher, who is a Bay Shore native, have some fun plans in store for Nalu Dry Goods. 

Fischer hopes to create a “chill” environment for customers to not only shop but to also hang out. 

Christopher is setting up a DJ booth in the back of the shop and the couple plans on hosting shopping parties, Fischer said. 

“We’re going to try to do like after-hour parties,” she said. “We’ll try to move everything off to the side and have a spot to dance or hang out and just chill.” 

There are couches and flat-screen TVs by the dressing rooms as well, where patrons can relax and watch surfing and skating videos. 

Eventually, the couple’s wants to fit an air hockey table inside the store. 

Supporting local the community is important for Fischer, she said, so she would like to incorporate artwork from artists in the community and collaborate with other businesses to make apparel. 

For example, Nalu Dry Goods recently created a shirt with Bubba’s Burrito Bar in Islip that features a surfing burrito.

Born and raised in Hawaii before moving to New York at 19, Fischer incorporates products from her birthplace, such as Hawaiian coffee, drinks and cookies. 

The owner said the sales have been “pretty good” so far, especially with summer around the corner, and customers who have visited the new shop are pleased with the new look. 

Bay Shore has always been Nalu Dry Goods’ home, and Fischer said she wouldn’t want it any other way. 

“I never wanted to leave here,” Fischer said. “We would love to do more community collaborations, be involved, and promote Bay Shore as much as possible because I think it’s really growing and the more us merchants stick together, the better it will be.” 

At Nalu Dry Goods’ grand opening on June 12, there will be giveaways, music from DJ Critical and sale specials.
