James Dougherty, retired NYPD officer from Oakdale, dies at 91

Family and friends of James A. Dougherty, a 50-year resident of Oakdale and former NYPD lieutenant U.S. Marine who died on Sunday, June 26, gathered for a committal service and military honors on Friday, July 1 at St. John’s Cemetery in Bohemia. He was 91.

Dougherty, the maternal grandfather of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Jack Coan, was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. He graduated from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, earned a bachelor’s degree at John Jay College, and obtained a master’s from Dowling College.

Dougherty was an officer with the New York City Police Department, retiring as a lieutenant in 1983.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his children, Karen of Sayville; Christopher of Manhattan; Michael of Barcelona; and Donna Coan and her husband Michael of Sayville, as well as his three grandchildren, Michael, Jack and Bella. Dougherty was predeceased by his oldest son Jimmy in 1981.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Raynor & D’Andrea Funeral Home in West Sayville.
