Dublin Deck in Patchogue removes volleyball courts, revamps outdoor dining area

|

After 13 years, the Dublin Deck crew in Patchogue has said goodbye to their trademark volleyball courts.

Owner Mark Miller said the staple recreational area “ran its course” and his goal is to “make the place nicer” so they can attract an older demographic.

It was what he saw during a night out at Gurney’s in Montauk with his family over the winter that inspired him to give the outdoor space a makeover.

“People were sitting outside next to these fire pits having hot cocoa, and I was like ‘Wow, we could do this,'” Miller said. “And that’s what we did. We built three, giant fire pits.”

Two of the fire pits hold 25 people and the largest one holds 50 people, he added.

In addition to the new fire pits, Miller said his team spruced up the entire property, repurposed the volleyball courts into a catering area, and added some waterfalls in the regular dining area.

The Deck has also created a slew of new events and specials happening at the restaurant’s revamped outdoor area.

“I wanted to create something out of the box,” Miller said.

Game Show Night — Tuesdays from 7-11 p.m. — has attendees spin a big wheel of fun, take a chance at winning some prizes, and sip on $5 Coors Light and Modelo beers. The night is led by a professional game show host and there is no cover to get in on the action, Miller said.

There are different family friendly games played each week, including “Family Feud,” “Casino Night,” “Name That Tune,” dating show games and more.

“It’s not just a little trivia thing,” Miller said. “Everybody who comes in spins the wheel when they first get there and wins something. It’s all ages and very much a family night out.”

Lucky winners can walk out of the Dublin Deck with such prizes as $200 gift certificates and a $1,000 cash.

For country music fans on Long Island, Humpday Hoedown is every Wednesday night at Dublin Deck, from 6-10 p.m. Live country music plays all night long, and there are giveaways and drinks specials that include $5 Corona Lights and Twisted Teas.

Dublin Deck is not the only Patchogue River bar going through changes, Miller said.

At Harbor Crab Co. on Division Street, the restaurant’s riverboat, The Barefoot Princess, is now gone. It’s departure opens up a nicer view of the river, he said.

Miller purchased the abandoned building next door and knocked it down too, and added outdoor dining along the boat slips under imported palm trees.

“Every year we just try to make it nicer, we’ve been there for 25 years,” Miller said of Dublin Deck. “You can’t do that if you don’t change, which is why we keep coming up with ideas. Some them work out. Some of them don’t work out. But it keeps everything fresh and customers engaged.”
