The Town of Babylon honored the life of a fallen Deer Park hero last week.
Last Saturday, elected officials gathered at Fabio Buttitta Memorial Park in Deer Park to dedicate its playground to Joseph Piagentini, a NYPD officer who was killed at 28 years old in 1971. He was a member of the 32nd Precicint for five years before being shot to death, along with his partner Waverly Jones, by the Black Liberation Army group.
The dedication was held a few blocks from where Joseph shared his him home with his wife, Diane, and daughters, Mary and Deborah.
Members of the NYPD Honor Guard, Emerald Society Pipes and Dream, and Suffolk County Police Department were on hand during the ceremony.
The day meant a lot to the Piagentini family.
“My husband was very close with children. He was a gentle man. He loved kids. He played basketball with the neighborhood children,” Diane told PIX11.
