When the Babylon Animal Shelter turned the public for help, the community responded in a big way.
Last month, GreaterBabylon reported the newly opened facility in Amityville was in dire need of blankets, comforters, rugs and dog beds. The story quickly went viral, and the donations came pouring in.
“Between [GreaterBabylon‘s article] and everyone sharing it, we have enough dog beds and blankets to see us into the immediate future,” said Chris Elton, the director of the shelter.
Over the course of three weeks, donations came rolling into the shelter. Now, an entire classroom and a 20-foot trailer are filled with much-needed resources.
“Normally, we have people drop off little items every day,” said Elton, “But the volume of donations over the past month has been just incredible.”
A large portion of the donations was driven — figuratively and literally — to the animal shelter thanks to Babylon resident Kristen Morse.
After hearing the shelter was in need, she set up donation boxes across Babylon Village. Over the last two weeks, she used two pickup trucks, two SUVs, and a sedan packed with donations to drop off the items.
“I tried to keep a count of what we collected but things got out of control very quickly,” Morse told GreaterBabylon following the outpouring of support.
Because of her work, the Babylon Rotary donated $500 to the shelter for new blankets and dog beds.
In addition to the local help, the Babylon Animal Shelter has seen an uptick in out-of-state calls looking to lend a hand.
“We even had a woman from Spain reach out to see how she could help,” said Elton.
While Elton and his team continue to sort through the donations, he says he will be redistributing surplus items to other shelters, animal rescues, and vets offices.
