The Town of Babylon released modified summer plans for its beaches and parks amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Scroll down to see the limitations.
Ocean beaches
One of the biggest news is that town-run beaches — which include Overlook, Cedar, and Gilgo beaches — will be open at 50% capacity during Memorial Day weekend. Babylon Town residents will only have access to these beaches.
To enter, beachgoers must provide a valid driver’s license with an address in the Town of Babylon. There will be no admission fee from May 23-31. New stickers will be required June 6. Click here to learn about this year’s discounted permits.
During these days, the Babylon beaches will let people in 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., while lifeguards will be on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Residents will only be allowed to go waist deep in the waters.
Face coverings are required when walking around sand and interacting with beach staff. The masks are not needed when in the waters or while sitting. Residents must space six feet apart from all groups at all times.
All beach playgrounds will be off limits, and beach sports are prohibited.
Restrooms will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Shoes and masks are required in the facilities. Cedar Beach Marina will not be open for bathrooms or vehicles.
The Salt Shack will be open at Overlook Beach and Cedar Beach for takeout only. The Gilgo Beach Inn at Gilgo Beach will be doing takeout only, as well.
All picnic tables have been removed to remain in compliance with New York State regulations.
Bay beaches
There are similar guidelines for Babylon’s bayside beaches at Tanner Park and Venetian Shores. Both will operate at 50% capacity, and are open for town residents only. There will be no fee from May 23-31. Stickers are required beginning June 27.
No swimming will be allowed at Tanner Park or Venetian Shores.
The parks’ playgrounds and fields are closed, and beach sports are prohibited. The tennis courts, however, will be open for play.
Sully’s Warf at Tanner Park will open on June 27. Katch at Venetian Shores will open Friday, May 22, for grab and go drinks and food.
Below are more closures from the Town of Babylon:
Marinas
All Babylon marinas will require social distancing. There will be no “rafting,” or tying together of boats between different groups for socializing purposes.
Playgrounds
Due to difficulty sanitizing thoroughly and maintaining social distance, all playgrounds will remain closed until further notice.
Pools & Spray Parks
Due to health and sanitation concerns, pool facilities or spray parks will be closed until guidance is issued from New York
Concerts & Events
All events that were previously scheduled for summer 2020 are postponed until further notice. The Town of Babylon is currently exploring how it can offer our residents the usual seasonal events that they enjoy (concerts, movies, etc.) in way that complies with social distancing and gathering guidelines. We will provide you with updates as we know more.
Day Camps & Programs
Due to health and sanitation concerns, summer programs or day camps are postponed until guidance is issued from New York State.
