Martin Scorsese and his daughter launch family film series in the Hamptons

|

A legendary filmmaker and his daughter are teaming up to bring movie magic to the South Fork.

Martin Scorsese and Francesca Scorsese have partnered with the Southampton Playhouse to debut a new film series that’s all about sharing their love of cinema — especially the kind they grew up watching together.

It’s called Scorsese Presents: Family Films, and it kicks off Thursday, Aug. 14, in Southampton.

The series will showcase some of the Oscar-winning director’s favorite classic films, specially curated for families and movie lovers of all ages. Each screening comes with a pre-recorded introduction from Martin and Francesca, who call the project “a sacred practice” rooted in their bond as father and daughter.

“We’ve been watching movies together for so long now,” the Scorseses said in a statement. “It’s been a sacred practice, like passing on the most precious family heirloom … Watching, re-watching. Reacting to them, absorbing them, seeing them through each other’s eyes.”

The first wave of screenings includes:

  • A Dog’s Life (1918) & The Red Balloon (1955) – Ages 5+
  • The Thief of Baghdad (1940) – Ages 5+
  • Bicycle Thieves (1948) – Ages 12+
  • Playtime (1967) – Ages 10+
  • The Wizard of Oz in IMAX (1939) – Ages 5+

Organizers say more films will be added throughout the yearlong series, and some events will feature guest speakers and unique programming to give added historical and cinematic context.

“It’s been a revelatory experience for both of us,” said Martin and Francesca. “We’re starting at the beginning of the whole process — the endless adventure of movies.”

The team at Southampton Playhouse hopes to make the series a monthly tradition, with new titles announced “as we go,” a spokesperson tells Greater Long Island.
