Montauk visitors react to ‘frightening’ yacht club tragedy

|

Vacationers and locals remained shaken Wednesday after a 33-year-old fashion entrepreneur originally from Ireland was found dead early Tuesday on a boat docked at the Montauk Yacht Club.

Police said Wednesday afternoon that initial autopsy results “did not show evidence of violence” in Martha Nolan-O’Slatarra’s death. However, “her final cause of death is pending further examination” by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office, police said.

Nolan-O’Slatarra, the founder of a New York and Hamptons-based fashion label, East X East, lived in Manhattan and was a frequent visitor to the Hamptons and Montauk, as evidence by posts on her TikTok account.

Police have said previously that homicide detectives are investigating the case.

Nikayla D’Amato, 23, of Massapequa said she noticed yellow crime scene tape and saw police on the docks when she arrived at the yacht club Tuesday for a vacation with her younger sister, Kiara, 20, and their mom.

“She seemed like she was a very successful young woman who had a good business,” said Nikayla D’Amato, a law school student who recently interned with the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office. “It’s such a shame.”

Kiara D’Amato, 20, was still processing the news of Nolan-O’Slatarra’s death.

“I think it’s crazy and I feel like it’s not heard of around here, really,” she said. “It’s frightening.”

Their mother commented, “No one has said anything at the club … so I don’t know what could have happened.”

Other vacationers who had just arrived by boat to the yacht club expressed surprise over the tragedy but said they had not heard any new details about Nolan-O’Slatarra’s death.

Business partner posts tribute

Nolan-O’Slatarra’s business partner Dylan Grace posted a touching tribute to her on Instagram, saying, “We dreamed big together, laughed harder than anyone else could understand and built so much from nothing.”

“I’m truly blessed and grateful to have had you in my life,” Grace added. “Love you so much Mar. Fly high girl.”

Suffolk police said Nolan-O’Slatarra was found unresponsive just after midnight Tuesday morning. First responders attempted CPR before the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Naked man running and screaming on dock, report

People aboard nearby boats at the Montauk Yacht Club told 27east that around midnight Tuesday morning, a man came running down the dock, crying and yelling for help — just prior to the discovery of an unresponsive Nolan-O’Slatarra aboard one of the man’s two boats, which were docked side-by-side in the marina.

Witnesses said he threw objects, including a tube of sunscreen, at neighboring boats to wake people up.

According to the report, two crew members from a nearby yacht rushed to the 54-foot SeaRay named Ripple and called 911. They attempted to revive the woman but were unsuccessful.
