Costa Rica vacation turns to nightmare for Long Islander after glass panel fall

|

What began as a dream vacation in Costa Rica turned into a nightmare when a Long Island man fell through a glass panel, suffering multiple severe injuries that have left him facing a mountain of medical bills and a grueling road to recovery.

Amanda Skeete of Bay Shore has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help her brother John Boyle, who received emergency treatment in Costa Rica before being airlifted to Miami for specialized care. The effort has already raised $15,000 through more than 139 donations as of Thursday evening.

Dream trip transformed

The freak accident transformed what had been a joyful getaway with his girlfriend into a medical emergency that spanned two countries.

“The medical expenses, emergency transportation, and long road to recovery ahead will be overwhelming,” Skeete wrote. “John is facing not only the physical pain and emotional toll of this tragedy, but also the financial burden that comes with such unexpected and critical care.

Skeete described Boyle as a kind and generous man with a great sense of humor.

“Now it’s our turn to show up for him,” she wrote.

Boyle posted an update Thursday morning from his hospital bed in Florida.

“I’m grateful to say the surgery went well, I’m feeling much stronger, and if all goes as planned, I should be heading home tomorrow night,” he wrote on his Facebook page. “I can’t thank you enough for the outpouring of love and support — your calls, texts, and generous donations mean more to me than I can put into words.

“A very special thank you to my amazing girlfriend, Tori, and my incredible family, who have stood by my side through every moment of this ordeal,” he continued. “I couldn’t have made it here without you.”

You won’t believe what keeps this Long Islander ticking — a World Heart Day story.

Long road to recovery

The campaign seeks to cover Boyle’s medical transport, hospital expenses and medical necessities moving forward.

“Every donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward covering his medical transport, hospital bills, and the essential care he needs to heal,” Skeete wrote.
