A 14-year-old boy has died following a Thursday morning crash involving an e-bike hit by a Chevy SUV in North Bellmore, Nassau County police said.
The Homicide Squad reported that the accident occurred at 7:05 a.m. at the intersection of Alice and Bellmore avenues. Detectives said the boy was riding the e-bike westbound on Alice Avenue when he was struck by a 2025 Chevrolet SUV traveling southbound on Bellmore Avenue.
The boy, who has been identified by a school district official as Mepham High School freshman Jayden Flores, according to a Newsday report, suffered severe trauma and was rushed by Nassau County Ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead by a hospital physician, authorities said.
The 45-year-old woman who was driving the SUV remained at the scene.
Locals have expressed concerns about the intersection, which has seen tragedy before. In 2019, Nassau Police Officer George Day was critically injured when he was struck while on patrol on his police motorcycle by hit-and-run driver. Day was hospitalized for two months before returning to his home.
Police said the investigation into Thursday’s fatal wreck is ongoing.
In a community-wide email, Bellmore-Merrick School District Superintendent Michael Harrington shared the district’s grief over Flores’ death.
“This is an unimaginable loss, and we will continue to surround his family and friends with love and support in the days ahead,” Harrington said in the letter.
Harrington added that social workers, counselors and psychologists are available to students and others in the school district community.
