A 41-year-old Hauppauge father was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries late Thursday after his car slammed into a tractor-trailer that was blocking traffic on Veterans Memorial Highway in Bohemia, Suffolk County police said.
Brian Yost was driving a 2008 Chevrolet sedan east on the highway when at about 8:42 p.m. he struck the rear of a 2020 International tractor-trailer that was stopped across all lanes of the roadway near 3030 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives said.
Police explained that the truck driver, Jonathan Pinto, 34, of Philadelphia was attempting to back the tractor-trailer southbound into a loading dock and had activated his hazard lights while blocking traffic when the crash occurred.
Yost was airlifted by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was being treated for serious injuries. Pinto was not hurt.
The Chevrolet was impounded for a safety inspection. Suffolk County’s Motor Carrier Unit conducted a post-crash investigation at the scene and later released the tractor-trailer back to its owner.
Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information to contact the Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad at 631.854.8552.
