No ice is safe: Sayville Fire Dept. takes ice rescue training to the edge

|

Ice may look solid — but it can give way in an instant.

The Sayville Fire Department put that danger to the test this week on Browns River, running ice rescue drills in below-freezing conditions.

Some 17 firefighters, trained to the Ice Rescue Technician level and certified to wear specialized exposure suits, practiced pulling “victims” from the icy water in a controlled environment. The exercises help the team respond quickly and safely if someone falls through the ice, the department said in a Facebook post titled, “No Ice is Safe Ice.”

The department reminded residents to stay off frozen ponds and rivers, keep children and pets away from ice, and immediately call 911 if someone falls through.

Ice can be ‘serious trouble’

“While the ice may look safe, conditions can change quickly and thickness is never guaranteed,” the fire department said in the post. “These situations can entice the public to explore, only to find themselves in serious trouble after falling through the ice.”

The department also stressed not to “attempt a rescue yourself.”
