|
Emergency responders rescued a Shirley woman who was pinned inside her car after a car wreck in Shirley on Monday.

A Shirley woman suffered critical injuries after becoming trapped in her vehicle during a two-car crash Monday morning at a major intersection, prompting a large emergency response and the temporary closure of William Floyd Parkway, authorities said.

Suffolk Police said the crash occurred about 8:45 a.m. at the intersection of William Floyd Parkway and Flower Hill Drive. Dawn Marie Martino, 56, of Shirley, was driving a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica east on Flower Hill Drive when her vehicle was struck by a southbound 2023 Jeep operated by Luis Rodriguez-Pineda, 55, also of Shirley.

Emergency responders arriving shortly before 8:50 a.m. found Martino trapped with her legs pinned inside a vehicle. Firefighters from the Mastic and Brookhaven fire departments, along with officers from the Suffolk Police Emergency Service Section, used multiple sets of HURST extrication tools to free the woman.

William Floyd Parkway was closed in both directions in the aftermath of the crash. Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check as Suffolk Police’s Seventh Squad detectives continue the investigation, police said.
