It’s been seven months since Alex Vargas last professional bout—yet there wasn’t much rust from the welterweight in his return to the ring on Friday.
The Bellport boxer moved to 4-0 (1KO) after he upended Ugandan fighter Deo Kizito (3-5, 2 KO) by unanimous decision at The Paramount of Huntington. The fight was part of Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing “Rockin’ Fights” 36 fight card.
Vargas, who had several fights fall through over the seven-month span, admitted he had a slow start to the fight as he exchanged blows with opponents in the first round.
“I felt anxious; I just wanted to get back in the ring,” said the 24-year-old. “You want to put on too good of a performance, you go out and try and do too much.”
By the third round, Vargas began to take over the match, hitting Kizito with a barrage of punches, including several blows to the body.
“I used my footwork a lot more and angled around him,” Vargas told GreaterPatchogue following the bout.
Going into the four-round match, the Bellporter knew was in for tough competition facing off against a fighter with four more fights under his belt.
“I knew he was going to be really tough,” said Vargas. “He’s gone eight rounds before; he’s fought a lot of tough prospects.”
As usual, The Paramount was cheering for their hometown fighter, rattling olé chants in support of El Toro.
“I love the olé chants; they actually started since the Golden Glove finals,” said Vargas, “and everybody got in-synch with it.
“We had a great, rowdy crowd tonight.”
Vargas plans to schedule his next fight within the next few months.
