Patchogue’s popular Alive After Five summer street festival became the first such event to win a Smart Growth Award from the Vision Long Island, an advocacy group for redevelopment and open space preservation.
Alive After Five, about to enter its 15th season, was recognized Friday at a Crest Hollow Country Club luncheon.
“Alive After Five brings thousands of people to downtown, Main Street, Patchogue,” said Vision Long Island’s director, Eric Alexander. “It brings culture. It brings art. It brings music. It brings food. And is precisely what downtowns should be doing to generate excitement. It’s a model.”
Fourteen awards in all were handed out Friday in Woodbury, both to projects and individuals, in categories that included Mix of Uses, Walkability, Compact Building Design, and others.
Alive After Five, run by the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, took the Citizen Participation award.
One of those citizens is James Skidmore, the chamber’s Alive After Five committee chairman.

“I’m very excited to be here,” Skidmore said in a brief interview before the presentations. “It’s great to be honored and recognized by the greater Long Island area for the things we organize and accomplish in Patchogue.”
