Cat cafés have been popping up across Long Island, but A Kitten Kadoodle Coffee Cafe in Selden is dedicated to doing things a little differently.
Opening up this past July was a long process. “I’m actually the first full cat café here in New York, where I’m not only a licensed rescue but we also own the café inside,” said owner Jennifer Rose Sinz. “But in the animal industry, there’s no competition whatsoever… we’re all doing this for the same purpose.”
And that purpose is to find these animals forever homes.
It started back in 2017 with the creation of Sinz’s adoption nonprofit, All About Pets Rescue. Originally held in her home and through foster families, the former daycare and nursery owner said that she would get calls asking her to help strays that oftentimes had sad stories.
“All the cats I’ve rescued were dumped, they’re sick and their families couldn’t take care of them anymore, the families move to another state and don’t take the animals with them,” she said. “There are so many rescues out there will only take kittens… my goal and ambition is to take in adult cats because they need another chance at a second life — they still need love and attention.”
She, along with her volunteers, help retrieve the cats, bring them to the vet, get they spayed or neutered and try to give them a second chance.
“We will work with them and if they up to a certain level of friendlessness and are good with people, we’ll bring them here to the café,” she said.
Sinz operates both her nonprofit and cat café at 600 Middle Country Road.
To the left is a full-service café that serves all vegetarian options, coffees, teas and smoothies, and to the right, a window-wrapped room looking into the lounge where you can hang with cats.
“When people are sitting here, enjoying their meal, they can still enjoy the view of what’s going on with the cats,” Sinz told GreaterPortJeff. “I wanted everything to be separate because a lot of people are allergic.”
Sinz said that their café is family-oriented and want people to feel at home when they visit. Open Mondays from noon to 7 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m., she wanted the hours to accommodate a large variety of people.
“We get a lot of college kids here that will sit with their laptops,” she said. “We have USB outlets and free WiFi… we wanted to give it a living room atmosphere.”
But they also offer dozens of events each month ranging in toddler programs to senior citizen events. They also cater to special needs. “A lot of cat cafés in the country focus solely on adult programs… so I wanted to change that,” she said. “We try to let everyone have a chance at enjoying themselves in the cat room.
For $5 a day, visitors can come and go as they please. Special events vary in pricing.
Since opening a few months ago, over 20 cats have found their new homes and they opened up adoptions to other furry friends including rabbits, dogs, chickens, ducks, guinea pigs and hamsters.
