Macy’s is downsizing in 2025.
The New York City headquartered retailer is set to shut 66 locations across the U.S., including three on Long Island, announced Thursday by multiple reports.
Axios reported that the closures are part of Macy’s “A Bold New Chapter,” a multi-year plan announced this past February. The strategy involves closing 150 underperforming locations through 2026 while continuing operations at 350 remaining stores.
Nine Macy’s stores are set to close in New York, including three locations on Long Island:
- Two Macy’s Backstage discount stores: New Hyde Park (Lake Success Shopping Center) and Melville (Walt Whitman Road)
- One Macy’s department store in Massapequa (Sunrise Mall)
Other closures in New York include stores in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, The Bronx, and Rochester.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” said Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc., in a statement.
Though the exact closing dates remain unclear, Macy’s has released a list stating the stores will close in the first quarter of 2025. Here’s the full list.
With these closures, the remaining Macy’s locations on Long Island will be in Hampton Bays, Huntington Station, Lake Grove, Bay Shore, Garden City, Valley Stream, and Manhasset.
Macy’s is joining a growing list of nationwide and local store closures, including well-known brands such as Big Lots, Red Lobster, Carrabba’s, Stop & Shop, and Bob’s Stores.
Editor’s note: This article has been updated after incorrectly stating the Walt Whitman Shops location is set to close.
