Babylon Rotary Club buys $10k worth of supplies for local soup kitchens

|

Several soup kitchens across the Town of Babylon were in need of donations.

To help, the Babylon Rotary Club organized its yearly Bulk Food Buy event to restock the non-profit organizations’ supplies.

“We invited five local soup kitchens to Restaurant Depot in Farmingdale and asked them to purchase anything they needed,” said Kristen Morse of the Babylon Rotary.

According to Morse, the club had received multiple phone calls from nearby soup kitchens saying their pantries were close to empty.

To remedy this, the Babylon Rotary Club spent $9,400 on food supplies for the following establishments:

The Mercy Inn In Wyandanch; United Methodist Church of Babylon; Christ Episcopal Church in Babylon; Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Babylon; and First Presbyterian Church in Babylon.

Move to Trash“The receipt was longer than any CVS receipt I’ve ever received,” said a laughing Morse, who organized the shopping spree with Babylon Rotary co-president Scott Lockwood.

“It was a very moving experience to meet the people who cook the meals,” added Morse.  “A lot of thought goes into the menus as they try to stretch ingredients, yet, also, provide good nutrition.”

This isn’t the first time the Babylon nonprofit used its fundraising money to help out local soup kitchens.  According to the club, organizers plan two bulk food buys a year—and have been doing so for the last 15 years.

The Babylon Rotary estimates it has donated over $300,000 over that period of time.
