Babylon Town demolishes dilapidated building in Copiague

|

Not only was it an eyesore in the community, but it was also an unsafe, unstable structure in Copiague.

That’s why Babylon Town officials decided to raze the 25,000-square-foot building at 1305 Strong Avenue on Thursday.

The property, which believed to house squatters as well as a makeshift skate park, has been deteriorating for years.

According to the town, there was a fire in the building in 2015 and parts of the tin roof blew away in recent storms.

“This property has a long and uniquely sorted history and I can speak on behalf of the Town of Babylon and the entire community that I’m glad to see it finally come down, I’m tired of this and I know everyone else is tired of it, too,” said Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “I would like to thank the New York State DEC and the Copiague Fire Department for cleaning up this property and keeping it safe.

Before sitting vacant for the nearly two decades, the property was used as a missile-component test facility, a manufacturing facility, a wallpaper production company and a car and boat repair facility

“I look forward to future development on this site,” said Schaffer.
