Former Deputy Mayor Kevin Muldowney officially retired from his position on Sept. 1, after 31 years of government service in Babylon Village.
He was replaced by Dominic Bencivenga, a village resident and former School Board member.
Muldowney, a Babylon resident for 48 years, said although he is now retired, he is still a busy person who likes to keep busy.
“It feels very different, I mean you’re not running everywhere and doing something coming up that has to be acted on,” Muldowney said. “So it’s nice and relaxing, but always busy — busy people keep busy.”
Reflecting on his past 31 years of service — including 18 years as deputy mayor — Muldowney said he is not one to pick out his greatest accomplishments.
However, a few that he highlights include his work with the Babylon Beautification Society, implementing the village’s iconic, old-fashioned street lighting system, and overseeing the operation of the E. Donald Conroy Golf Course.
Muldowney said fulfilling former Mayor Donald Conroy’s dream of opening a golf course in Babylon Village was his most notable accomplishment back when he was a trustee.
He has been involved with the golf course since its opening in 1999.
“He took me down there, showed me the land, and his dream came true,” Muldowney said. “Now, we have a beautiful, par-three, golf course in the village — that was a big thing and everyone in the village seems to be enjoying it.”
Muldowney also spearheaded the operation and maintenance of the village’s marinas throughout the years, as well as ensured the safety of the boaters who utilize the basin.
The list of Muldowney’s government acts goes on, but he said he is most proud of being part of a village who trusted and supported him these past three decades.
“They trusted me enough to elect me all these years and put their trust in me to do the right thing, that means a whole lot to me,” Muldowney said.
As far as future plans go, Muldowney said he will be enjoying his retirement with his family and scheduling some tee time on the green.
“I have to keep testing out that golf course, make sure it’s in good shape by playing a lot,” Muldowney said.
