Babylon Village launches Facebook page to better inform residents, visitors

|

Babylon Village has just launched a Facebook page to disseminate timely information for village residents and visitors alike.

That information can range from emergency road closures, to upcoming event details, to registration deadlines.

“People want to know things right away,” said Babylon Mayor Ralph Scordino. “And I think this will be a great asset for the village, to have people understand and know what’s going on.”

That doesn’t mean the village’s newsletters or email blasts will stop.

“But [the new page] gives us access to many in our village who are on Facebook,” Scordino said.

Babylon Village Trustee Mary Adams will be administrating the page.

“We were talking about how to keep the residents best informed on events, safety measures, things to do with the village that could help them,”  Adams said. “And it’s really best through a Facebook page.”

The page was made possible through a shared services agreement with the village and the town, which offers Facebook advertising funding — for better post circulation — as well as town personnel to help Adams monitor the page.

As Adams and the mayor explained, there are restrictions involving the Facebook feed — considering what’s posted to the governmental page becomes official.

So notices have to be thoroughly reviewed.

For example, take a possible post about parking enforcement. That information would have to be accurate.

“Otherwise a ticket might have to  be thrown out,” Scordino said.

Personnel postings would also have be treated with the utmost of care, he added.

The Facebook page launched June 22. Since then there have been posts about summer program registrations for kids, news of the village pool opening, and a post congratulating Babylon’s graduating class of 2017.  (Scroll down for more.)

Adams said the page has been working well, pointing to Friday night’s gazebo concert that some attendees said they learned about through the village’s Facebook page.

“The demographics of people using mobile [are outpacing] those actually sitting at a desktop, and they want the information instantaneously,” Adams said.

“And it’s been well received.”
