Boston terrier dies in Mount Sinai elevator accident

|
Dog killed by descending elevator after wandering into open shaft.

A Boston Terrier was killed Monday afternoon in Mount Sinai when it entered an open elevator shaft and was pinned by the elevator when it came down, Suffolk County Police said.

The incident occurred at 1:18 p.m. at a residence on Ira Road in the Plymouth Estates private community. Police said the doors to the ground-floor elevator entrance failed to close as the elevator traveled upward. The dog then walked into the shaft, and the elevator descended, killing the pet.

Police did not immediately release information about what caused the door malfunction. No other injuries were reported.

There have been some similar elevator-shaft incidents involving pets in recent years. In 2020, a police K-9 in Pennsylvania died after falling down an unsecured elevator shaft during a search operation. In separate cases in multiple states, dogs have been rescued, injured or killed when leashes became caught in elevator doors or when doors malfunctioned and failed to close properly.
