Brookhaven tears down eyesore on Route 25A in Rocky Point

|

Just in time for this year’s Miller Place-Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which marches up Route 25A on March 16, Brookhaven Town on Monday did its part to brighten up the parade route.

The town’s waste management crew demolished the long-vacant home at 118 Route 25A.

Town Supervisor Dan Panico said the property will be absorbed by the expansive Rocky Point Pine Barrens State Forest that surrounds it. New York’s Department of Conservation purchased the abandoned property, which had become a blighted site on the south side of Route 25A.

Located near Aldi supermarket and Spiro’s restaurant — and across the street from the vacant Rocky Point Drive-In property — the half-acre lot included a 916-square-foot, one-story house that for years had been covered in graffiti. The property had previously sold in 2007 for $315,000.

The structure was demolished by the town under a “fast track” process to quickly remove unsafe buildings — so-called “Zombie homes” — from neighborhoods.

The town actively looks to identify other neglected properties for demolition, saying the effort aims to improve safety and curb blight in local neighborhoods.

Last month, a town demolition crew tore down the house and cleaned up the property 77 North Howell Ave. in Centereach. In December, the town demolished the abandoned structure at 691 Horseblock Road in Farmingville.
