The Center Moriches Fire Department gained national recognition this month as a recipient of the 2025 National Life Group “Do Good Heroes” award, which honors first responders for going above and beyond in serving their communities.
Tapped as a monthly winner in the nationwide program, the department was nominated by Lauren Coffey of Our Infinite Company for its consistent commitment to “courage, commitment, and compassion.”
The department, made up of about 70 volunteer members, annually handles 2,200-plus emergency calls and is trained in specialized water rescues to serve the coastal Moriches area.
In March, firefighters played a critical role in containing a fast-moving brush fire that threatened to escalate into a large-scale disaster reminiscent of the Long Island’s 1995 wildfires. The department additionally assisted neighboring towns during the emergency.
The department also actively supports the community — leading programs that educate local students on fire safety, assisting Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, and raising over $20,000 for the family of child abuse victim Thomas Valva following his tragic death.
As a “Do Good Heroes” award winner, the department receives $1,000 to donate to a nonprofit of its choice. A public celebration and blood drive is scheduled for Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Center Moriches firehouse, 301 Main St.
