Suffolk’s top prosecutor pledged Wednesday to prosecute “to the fullest extent of the law” three men arrested this week when police found molotov cocktails inside their vehicle during a traffic stop in Central Islip.
“Thanks to the great work of Suffolk County Police Officers, these Molotov cocktails were discovered and neutralized before anyone could be hurt,” District Attorney Raymond Tierney said.
He added that his office would work with law enforcement partners to ensure “individuals who seek to endanger our citizens are caught and prosecuted.”
The three men — Lorenzo Alvarado-Navarrete, 18, of Bay Shore; Elvis Romero-Martinez, 20, of Brentwood; and Albert Yanes-Moran, 20, also of Brentwood — are charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony.
The trio was jailed overnight and scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip.
Suffolk Police said Third Precinct officers pulled over a 2007 Honda Accord operated by Romero-Martinez about 2:28 a.m. on Tuesday after watching him drive erratically on Lexington Avenue near Calebs Path.
Inside the car, police discovered two glass bottles filled with gasoline, with gasoline-soaked rags protruding from the tops, in the passenger-side compartment.
Emergency service officers responded to the scene to disarm the devices. Authorities determined the incident was not terrorism related, police said.
