Coastal storm on track to impact Long Island on Saturday

|

Staff report

Looks like you probably should’ve hung up the holiday lights last weekend.

Weather forecasters said this weekend is looking like a wash, what with the coastal storm that’s expected to bring heavy rain and high winds to Long Island and that could evolve into a nor’easter and blizzard for much of New England.

The Sayville area should expect rain for much of the day on Saturday and wind gusts of up to 58 mph, according to Accuweather. A coastal advisory — in effect from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday — said “wave action from strong northerly winds could cause minor coastal flooding and minor beach erosion around the times of high tide.”

Tomorrow’s temperature probably won’t reach 50 degrees, the forecast says, and it will sink to below freezing at night.

PSEG Long Island said in a Facebook post and texted customers that the power company is prepared for the storm, noting that the weather “conditions may cause tree limbs to break and pull down wires, causing outages.” Tomorrow’s nasty weather comes just five days after Suffolk County was hit with heavy rain and high winds throughout Monday.

For residents who lose power, PSEG advises to report outages through its mobile app, send a direct message on Facebook, or text OUT to PSEGLI (773454).

PSEG’s MyPower map tracks outages across Suffolk and Nassau counties.
