Members of the Patchogue-Medford community will gather this June to remember Joseph Agostinello, head coach of the Suffolk County League II champion 1967 Patchogue football team and a longtime physical education teacher in the school district.
Agostinello died on Wednesday, April 12, in Florida. He was 91.
A memorial ceremony celebrating his life and the impact he had as a coach and teacher will be held June 17 at 11 a.m. at Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Patchogue. A noon luncheon will follow at the Bellport Country Club.
Agostinello’s dedication to education and coaching for nearly half a century in Patchogue-Medford schools is considered a testament to his passion and commitment to his students and athletes.
Agostinello guided the 1967 Patchogue High School football team to a 6-2 record. The Raiders edged Port Jefferson 12-7 on Thanksgiving to stake claim to a share of the League II title with Bay Shore.
Agostinello is the third prominent Patchogue-Medford athletics coach to pass away in recent months. George Ulrich, an assistant coach on the 1967 championship football team and a longtime Patchogue-Medford varsity baseball coach, died in February. Longtime teacher and former varsity football coach Tom Julian also died in February.
Agostinello is survived by Denise, his wife of 61 years; his daughter Allison Szachta and her husband Paul; and granddaughters, Emma and Olivia. He is previously deceased by his son Jim.
