The newly named Gateway Park at the corner of Dixon Avenue and Great Neck Road in Copiague will be playing host to a Christmas tree lighting ceremony after the first annual Lighted Children’s Christmas Parade.
The event, scheduled for Friday, Dec. 13, at 6 p.m., is being organized in collaboration between the OLA Knights of Columbus #9267, Copiague Chamber of Commerce and the Copiague Fire Department.
“We are excited to celebrate the start of the holiday season by bringing this exciting, new format to the local Copiague Community,” said Bill Monroe, grand knight of the local Knights of Columbus.
The festivities will begin with dozens of floats parading up Great Neck Road from Montauk Highway toward the Copiague park. (Note: The road will be closed in both directions due to the parade)
Leading the fun will be grand marshall, Dr. Kathleen Bannon, superintendent of Copiague School District.
The marching will then lead to a tree lighting ceremony, which will also feature live entertainment, holiday refreshments, and children’s activities.
After the tree lighting, the festivities will head indoors at Our Lady Assumption at 1 Molloy Street. In addition to food and family-fun entertainment, the Big Jolly Man will be stopping by too.
“Of course, it would not be a Christmas party without Santa and Mrs. Claus who are so excited to arrive in Copiague and greet our community,” said Dominick Nuzzi, assistant chief of the Copiague Fire Department. “Bring your cameras for one-of-a-kind photo opportunities!”
