Lindenhurst’s Jack Winey was one of four Cortland national champion football players selected to the 2023 Associated Press (AP) Division III All-America team.

Winey, a junior linebacker, was a member of two Long Island championship teams at Lindenhurst. He set a Cortland single-season record with 141 tackles this season. He also had two sacks, three fumble recoveries and eight quarterback hurries for the Red Dragons (14-1).

Loaded with Long Island talent, Cortland wins NCAA DIII football title, 38-37

During Cortland’s dramatic 38-37 win over North Central (Illinois) in the NCAA Division III championship Dec. 15, Winey tallied seven tackles and had one sack and a fumble recovery.

Winey started all 15 games for Cortland, posted six double-figure tackle games, including NCAA playoff wins over Grove City (16), Alma (13) and Randolph-Macon (10).

Cortland’s junior quarterback Zac Boyes from the Buffalo area, senior wide receiver Cole Burgess of Greenwich and junior offensive lineman Cody Aiken from Canandaigua were named to AP first team.

Cortland recruits heavily on Long Island. This year’s team included 37 players who played at Long Island high schools.
