Dennis Smith, a true champion for Patchogue, and a man who played a vital role in the village’s resurgence, has died. He was 74.
“His leadership, dedication and vision left a lasting impact not only on Main Street but on all who had the privilege to work alongside him,” reads a message on behalf of the entire Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce.
“Our hearts are with Dennis’s family, friends, and all who knew and admired him.”
Smith served as the executive director of the Patchogue Business Improvement District for nearly two decades, and also was the village’s special projects coordinator, a job that put him at the helm of the much-applauded, Patchogue-wide parks overhaul.
He retired in the fall of last year, with former chamber leader David Kennedy assuming both roles.
“Dennis was an amazing mentor and an even better friend whom I will miss deeply,” Kennedy said. “He was a prime architect of Patchogue’s renaissance and his legacy is entrenched in Patchogue Forever.”
Smith also served as grand marshal of the Patchogue St. Patrick’s Day Parade in March of 2022. He was selected for the honor in 2020, but two subsequent parades were cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions, and then concerns.
“Dennis was more than a community leader — he was a true champion for Patchogue, whose legacy will be felt for generations,” the chamber’s message further states.
Service arrangement details will be shared as soon as they become available.
