The state Department of Transportation will be upgrading the drainage system along a badly damaged stretch of Route 112 in Patchogue — as well as conducting the already planned repaving of the roadway.
The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year, according to a DOT spokesperson, Eileen Peters.
The repaving project was suspended in August after severely damaged drainage basins were discovered along the stretch of Route 112 between East Main Street and Lincoln Road just north of Sunrise Highway.
“We’re very aware of the deteriorating condition of the roadway, particularly the right lane heading northbound,” Peters said. “We know the urgency to move this along and repair it.”
Design and construction engineers are meeting soon to figure out the scope of the work, as well as how much it will cost, to present to the state controller’s office for funding, Peters said.
“They looked at the drainage areas that were not cleanable or repairable, and thought it best to upgrade the system within that area,” she said. “We do not want to repave this road only to come back … and rip it up to do more drainage work.”
