The superintendent of Eastport-South Manor Central School District confirmed that at least 47 students and staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 between Dec. 23 – Jan. 6.
An additional 25 students and eight staffers have been placed on quarantine, Superintendent Joseph Steimel said.
“All of our schools currently remain open,” Stimmel said in a Jan. 6 letter addressing the district community. “As the health and safety of our students and staff is our foremost priority, please know that we will continue to monitor positive cases of COVID-19 in the district.”
In that same communication, the superintendent said 25 positive COVID-19 cases were reported to the district on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. That includes 22 students at the district’s junior-senior high school, a staff member at Dayton Avenue School, and one student each at Tuttle Avenue School and Eastport Elementary.
On Monday, Steimel reported to the community that the district had been notified that 14 students and eight staffers tested positive during the winter recess that began Dec. 23.
No further quarantine measures were necessary related to this group, the administrator said, because the first signs of symptoms and positivity occurred during the recess, so contact tracing was not required of the district.
Among those students reported to have tested positive during the winter recess, 13 attend the junior-senior high school and one goes to Eastport Elementary.
Four of the staffers among the group work at the junior-senior high school, while there was one staffer from each of South Street Elementary School, Eastport Elementary and Dayton Avenue School. An itinerant teacher was also among those who tested positive during the holiday break.
