Connetquot girls volleyball raises nearly $5,000

Coaches, players and friends of the girls volleyball programs at Connetquot and Walt Whitman High Schools.

The Connetquot High School girls volleyball program hosted a charity game Oct. 2 and raised nearly $5,000 to support the Dezy Strong Foundation. Matthew “Dezy” DiStefano, a Connetquot school district resident and the Sachem High School North assistant volleyball coach, thanked the crowd for their participation and offered inspirational advice about never giving up in his fight against cancer.

Connetquot girls volleyball Coach Justin Hertz said DiStefano’s mantra, “We Get To,” is a constant reminder of “just how precious life is, and to appreciate the little moments.”

The Dezy Strong Foundation supports families affected by cancer that do not have adequate health insurance, and face high medical expenses. Click here to contribute to the foundation.

“I am so proud of our program to be able to do our part for such a positive foundation,” Hertz said. “Dezy is an amazing man, and to tackle his battle in the way that he is, is inspiring.”
