Elmont man wins $2M Powerball prize with $1 last-minute add-on

|

An Elmont man turned a $1 impulse decision into a multi-million dollar Powerball bonanza.

Jacques Mutombo claimed a $2 million Powerball PowerPlay prize Tuesday after matching the first five numbers drawn on March 23, New York Lottery officials announced.

The winning numbers were 12, 18, 47, 56 and 63, with Powerball 01.

Mutombo purchased the lucky ticket at the 7-Eleven at 207 Jericho Drive in Mineola. At checkout, he added the optional $1 PowerPlay feature to his wager. The decision paid off — doubling his base $1 million second prize.

He took a single lump sum payment of $1.3 million after required withholdings.
