Emergency crews rescued a father and son who fell through the ice at Gibbs Pond in Nesconset on Sunday afternoon, according to an announcement from the Smithtown Department of Public Safety.
Officials said members of the department responded alongside the Nesconset Fire Department following reports of an ice rescue involving two people in the water.
Park Ranger Crocilla was first on scene and was able to remove a 12-year-old boy from the pond with the help of a nearby Good Samaritan.
Firefighters arriving moments later rescued the boy’s father.
Both were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for further evaluation, officials said.
The Smithtown Department of Public Safety used the incident to remind residents that ice conditions can be unpredictable, even when surfaces appear solid.
“Thick ice does not always mean safe ice,” the department stated, noting that fluctuating weather can weaken ice as melting and refreezing occurs.
Officials urged the public to obey posted warning signs and avoid ice that appears cracked, slushy, dark, clear, or honeycombed, which may indicate dangerous conditions, according to the announcement.
It wasn’t made clear why the two ventured out onto the ice.
