West Islip High School has named its Class of 2018 valedictorian and salutatorian.
Those honors went to seniors Molly McLaughlin (valedictorian) and Melodi Doganay (salutatorian).
There wasn’t enough time in the day for either for these students.
McLaughlin, who boasts a weighted 107.8 GPA, served as the school’s vice president of the National Honor Society while also being a member of the English Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society and Brainstormers Academic Club.
In addition, she worked as the school newspaper managing editor, captained the Science Olympiad Team (where she won many awards), and was a musician in the Tri-M Music Honor Society.
Volunteering was a large part of McLaughlin’s high school years, as she spent time helping the West Islip Beautification Society, Battle of the Books team, as well as tutoring at the public library.
Doganay participated in many of the same organization as her fellow student.
When she wasn’t acing tests for her weighted GPA of 107.1, she was participating in the National Honor Society, English Honor Society, and Foreign Language Honor Society.
With a forte in science, Doganay was named a National Merit Semifinalist in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. In 2018, she earned an honorable mention in the New York State Science and Engineering Fair.
Outside of the classroom, Doganay was the captain of the varsity kickline, and she volunteered as the Thirst Project and Common Hope.
For college, both students will be pursuing science-related degrees. McLaughlin is heading to Yale University and is majoring in neuroscience, while Doganay pursues a biochemistry degree at Rice University.
