Girl Scout installs equipment to help anglers, environment at West Meadow

|

This Girls Scout found a way to help fishermen while preserving the environment — all at the same time.

Earlier this month, Lauren Reitano of Troop 2547 in Centereach installed Monofilament Recycling Receptacles for her Girl Scout Gold Award Project at West Meadow Beach.

The Stony Brook beach’s new receptacles were provided to allow fishermen to properly discard their fishing line.

Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine was proud to see the new project emerge from an up-and-coming community contributor.

“Installing the monofilament receptacles is doing a great service to the environment and protecting the wildlife in and around the water,” he said. “Fishing line is one of the most frequent and hazardous forms of marine debris and I want to thank Lauren for helping to prevent more plastics from getting into our waterways.”
