Hometown Bake Shop of Centerport set to open Patchogue location

|

By the end of August, people in Patchogue might be wondering about a new sweet smell wafting through the village.

That would be from Hometown Bake Shop, a Centerport-based bakery planning to expand into the village just a few weeks from now.

Don’t just expect just cakes, pies and brownies, although they have plenty of that. The owner of Hometown Bake Shop says bakeries aren’t just for sweets anymore.

They will have a menu of sweet and savory items, serving up both breakfast and lunch along with baked goods.

Owner Danna Abrams says that if anyone in this area has been to the Centerport bakery, the menu in the new shop will be familiar.

But she is cooking up something special for Patchogue.

“We also wanted to have some new and exciting items sold exclusively in the Patchogue location,” she said. “This includes more brunch options, breads sold by the loaf, and a more extensive lunch menu.”

Everything in her bake shop is made from scratch.

Perusing her menu options is likely to bring visions of chocolate chunks dancing in your head. They have an extensive collection of cookies including old fashioned sugar cookies, black and whites, and linzer.

But it’s also just as likely you’ll come across breakfast specialties like their Breakfast Bombs.

“We have two different types of bombs,” explained Abrams. “Our Cream Cheese Bombs are bagel dough baked around cream cheese. For example, our French toast bagel bomb is bagel dough baked around maple cream cheese butter dipped with cinnamon sugar.”

They also have egg bombs, which are similar, but instead of cream cheese they’re loaded with eggs and more.

“We have a new Fried Chicken Egg Bomb that has eggs, a piece of fried chicken, mozzarella, bacon, caramelized onions with smoked aioli and jalapenos.”

The lunch menu is just as appetizing with Abrams’ take on classics like the Cuban, the Reuben and Greek sandwiches.

Hometown Bake Shop has quite a following, which has garnered the shop some big press. Abrams credits the dedication she and her staff put into each and every product they make for their success.

“Our employees come in before sunrise to make everything homemade and fresh,” she said. “We are food lovers, so we never stop creating and are always excited about the next new thing.”

Speaking of good things, Abrams was able to highlight some of her more unique menu items people need to try including their Benedict Donut, an “Over the Rainbow” pie, and their After School Special bar with a graham crust and homemade cashew butter (“because we are a peanut-free bakery”) and house-made fresh strawberry jam.

Danna grew up in Huntington and she said her passion for food took her from Long Island to Manhattan (Momofuku Milk Bar) and back. Her food inspiration comes from all over.

“From my childhood and things my family used to make, to what my kids enjoy today, I create things that give me the feeling of home,” she said.

Family is important to Abrams, and she considers her bakery workers part of a family with shared values and dedication.

“Everyone here believes that food should be made from scratch, the freshest ingredients and the highest quality,” she said.

She also plans to run both locations despite the distance, with the help of her staff keeping the same homemade mentality.

“They have helped to create a support system so that I can be at both places and give up sleep for the rest of my life,” Abrams joked.

Patchogue was a natural pick for Hometown Bake Shop’s second location because of the food culture that has been cultivated in the village. Abrams said she also fell in love with the community and the atmosphere she found there.

“Patchogue is full of foodies and people with passion and respect for good meals,” she said.

The new store will be at 16 Havens Avenue at the base of the New Village at Patchogue apartment complex, just north of the The Cuban and Salon Brio.

“We were looking for a place in Patchogue and it was just a perfect fit,” she said of the location.

Abrams expects their grand opening will happen sometime at the end of August. The shop is very active on Instagram, so she suggested people check the Hometown Bake Shop feed for news of the exact date.

But, if you do want a sample of what’s to come you won’t have to trek to the North Shore.

“Even though we aren’t open yet you can still find us in Patchogue at the Sunday Morning Farmers Market and the last Alive After Five,” on Thursday, Aug. 8, she said.

Abrams’ career led her to some top bake shops and restaurants, but her real training is a little closer to the heart.

“I was raised with two amazing grandmas,” she said. “One Italian and one Jewish. Food is always how they expressed love and they always made everything from scratch.”
