Hoop Lab opens 10,000-square-foot basketball training center in Commack

|

The facility just north of Costco is now the company’s largest in three states.

Hoop Lab has opened a 10,000-square-foot basketball training facility in Commack, expanding into Suffolk County with its third Long Island location.

The facility at 4 Henry St., just north of the Costco complex, is the company’s largest, with areas dedicated to shooting, ball handling and athletic training, according to founder Richie Perna.

Perna said the expansion followed demand from Suffolk families already traveling to Hoop Lab’s Nassau County locations in Roslyn and Syosset. The company reviewed where its members lived and found enough coming from Suffolk to begin looking for space closer to those families, he said.

Perna founded Hoop Lab in Roslyn in 2022 after seeking basketball training for his three sons.

“At one point, I was driving to Harlem four days a week for training,” Perna told Greater Long Island.

The business later moved into a larger Roslyn facility and expanded to Syosset.

It also operates locations in New Jersey and Massachusetts.

In Commack, players train in groups of no more than four per coach and are grouped by age and ability following an initial evaluation, according to Perna. The academy focuses on year-round skills instruction rather than operating travel teams.

“It’s really about developing the individual player,” Perna said.

The facility operates seven days a week. Monthly memberships start at $255 for four sessions, with a one-time $99 enrollment fee.
