In 2015, as a senior, Mary O’Hara led Islip High School to its first-ever New York State girls soccer championship.
After being named New York Player of the Year that year, O’Hara has continued her success at the Divison-I level for Florida Atlantic University.
Now the 5-foot-4 midfielder recently earned All-South Region recognition from United Soccer Coaches.
“I’m so honored to receive this award, we as a team had an amazing year and I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and coaches,” said the junior, who had 13 points for the Owls this season.
O’Hara, who started all 21 games this season, helped lead her team to a first-ever regular-season title with a conference record of 8-1-1 (12-8-1 overall.) The Owls advanced to the playoffs where they were upended by Southern Miss in the semifinals, 1-0.
“Winning the C-USA regular-season title has never been done before so having the opportunity to be a part of something like that was very special,” said O’Hara.
In three seasons with FAU, the finance major notched nine goals and seven assists.
Owls head coach Patrick Baker praised his soon-to-be senior.
“Mary enjoyed a tremendous junior year at Florida Atlantic University and has been viewed as one of our top players for some time,” said Baker. “Being selected All-Region as an underclassman is special and her play helped lead our team to another double-digit win season this year.
Thank goodness we have one more year with Mary and look forward to great things in 2019.”
