The community began rallying Tuesday behind the family of the construction worker killed in Monday’s tragic Nesconset crash, while the driver accused in his death was in court pleading not guilty to driving while ability impaired by drugs.
A GoFundMe was launched for Joel Sicon-Porix’s wife Glendys Zacarías, and their three children. The Mastic 38-year-old was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital after he and two coworkers were struck by a car driving on the wrong side of the road as the road crew was preparing for a paving job on Townline Road.
The organizer of the GoFundMe, Miriam Sanchez, wrote that all donations will go toward funeral expenses and care for the couple’s three children.
How to give
Sicon-Porix belonged to Laborers Local 1298, as do his two injured coworkers, Kevin Chavez-Sarmiento, 30, of Bay Shore, and Jose Gonzalez-Colindres, 33, of Brentwood. The three were working for East Moriches-based Rosemar at the time of the crash, GLI has learned.
Thomas Lobianco, 26, of Lake Ronkonkoma entered his not guilty plea at Suffolk FIrst District Court in Central Islip. Bail was set at $200,000 cash, $400,000 insured bond, or $2,000,000 partially secured surety bond.
Police say Lobianco had just finished an overnight shift at a nearby 7-Eleven and sat in his vehicle for roughly 20 minutes before driving away.
He was allegedly driving east in the westbound lane of Townline Road when he ran a red light, drove onto the sidewalk and struck the three workers before his car hit an electronic crossing sign, a utility pole and plowed threw a vinyl fence.
