Lessing’s restaurants team up with the Crayon Initiative for Earth Day

Helping to save the environment, one crayon at a time.

That’s the goal of a nonprofit called the Crayon Initiative, which helps recycle that time-tested, child-friendly coloring utensil.

After the crayons are recycled, they are redistributed to children’s hospitals across the U.S.

Over the years, crayon waste has become a big deal. According to the group, a half-million crayons are discarded each year and its waxy, non-biodegradable waste is filling up landfills. The breakdown process for crayons can take hundreds of years.

To help combat the problem, the Lessing’s Main Street Restaurants have teamed up with the Crayon Initiative.

Lessing’s Main Street Restaurants — Post Office, Maxwells, Library Café, Southside and Finnegan’s– has collected crayons since March. But Earth Day is going to be a bigger deal.

On that day, April 22, the Lessing’s locations are encouraging people to bring in used crayons in exchange for a free cookie.

Those cookies are being made by Stanley’s bakery in East Islip.

It’s about “helping make the world a better place,” said Jen Cantin, a Lessing’s spokeswoman.
